ALONSO CANO (1601 - 1667)
The Infant Don Balthasar Carlos, 1634/1635

The Infant Don Balthasar Carlos was the son of Philip IV and Isabella of Bourbon and unfortunately, he did not have a long life (1629 - 1646). Here, he shown in hunting clothings. For some time, it was thought that this painting was another work by Velazquez, due to the similar atmosphere of the portrait of the Infant as a rider. However, the stylistic similarities to other works of Alonso Cano, allowed the re-attribution. Furthermore, Cano was "Maestro de la Pintura del Principe Don Balthasar Carlos de Austria" and he was at the court of Madrid in 1634 for the first time which also coincides with the age of the portrayed prince.
