Excerpt from "10 Photographic Portraits of Christian Boltanski, 1946 - 1964", 1972

The booklet of "10 Portrait Photographs of Christian Boltanski, 1946 - 1964" actually shows pictures of other children of various ages. The French artist who had already dealt with the project of  "restoring his youth" by means of art in previous project, now concerns himself with the question of the photographic identity. The pictures were actually taken by his partner, artist Annette Messenger.

Boltanskis "memories" of an photographically constructed past might very well be the perfect idealization of a multi-faceted development through childhood, the adventure of growing up with all kinds of identity. But furthermore, they present another question - is it really possible for any photograph to supply the actual evidence of our past?
