Boy Drawing

ANTON GRAFF
The Drawing Boy, ca. 1770

Far from the dreamy idealizations of the Rokoko period of his time, Anton Graff from Switzerland would never have thought of making the face of his young subject more beautiful. He even keeps the almost invisible line around the mouth (with which children often indicate that they are aware of being watched) while he appears to be looking at the piece of paper over the book from which he is copying something. It is an honest portrayal, with all the wrinkles and shadows and the expressive chin.
