ANTONIO MANCINI (1852 - 1930)
           'O Prevetariello, 1870

Among the favourite subjects of the young Mancini were boys and "scugnizzi", or street urchins, in demand by foreign collectors and artists in search of "souvenirs d'Iralie".
Among the first to appreciate Mancini was Hendrik Mesdag, a naturalist painter of The Hague school. Little seminarians and coral-vendors, street children and fragile water-sellers easily satisfied the contemporary taste for pathetic/picturesque images with decidedly local traits.
