Portrait of a Boy, 1646

A seven-year old boy, as the artist himself indicates in the upper right, with a trusting and faithful face which does not seem to be as important a factor for the parents as his total appearance.

It should be noted that his clothes, though of heavy materials, are of the latest French fashion. Obviously, the parents had just bought them - and the painter was there to preserve this moment.

... A moment of transition as the small child that he was just seconds before has vanished, and in his place, an older boy has appeared ... The second stage of childhood has begun.
