Tarcisius

ALEXANDRE FALGUIÈRE
Tarcisius martyre chrétien, 1868

Tarcisius, a character in in the novel Fabiola by cardinal Wiseman, supposedly gives his life rescuing a consecrated wafer. He dies, holding it to his breast. Falguiére allowed this young soldier boy to wear clothes in his moment of death, whereas many other artists of his time still relished in the tradition of portraying their soldiers as young, masculine and naked.
